Acquiring Knowledge

Once we’re graduate from school we are expected to learn some and rightfully knowledgeable on a certain subject we’re pursuing.

Learning broad subject in schools or books doesn’t mean we really understand it. Once my teacher said that the best way to understand is to teach someone the subject that we want to master. Teaching the same subject make her easily solve many problem variants, that makes sense.
Repetition is key.

We’re living in a continuous learning experience, once we thought that we’re mastering something there’ll be something new that comes up and have to deal with. I’d take a step back and recall that knowledge is understood.
I make 2 mental step in the back of my mind to understand a subject:

  1. I need to explain to myself what is it in the nutshell and then go into its details.
  2. I should be able to explain and make them understand the subject matter to a 5 graders or my granny.

If I can’t make the second step, I might not grasp the nutshell or I simply don’t understand it properly. Back to square one. It might take some time but it’s worth the time invested, once we understand it – it won’t simply goes away.

The best endeavor

There are memes that showing contrast on approach to result.

One picture showing old and wrinkle vegan activist, and other picture showing old yet looks lively, vibrant actress coming with tag line she eats meats.

There’s also story telling that one lady did her diet, strictly controlling her food intake, take vitamins and supplements under professional supervision, did all health checks regularly. On top of that she also did her exercises. She died in her 50s. On the other hand, this guy eats everything, no control on his food intake, be it junk food or salt and sugar, walk and commute are counted as exercise. He’s in his 80s now, well and energetic with no signs of him slowing down.

Another familiar story that we have experienced it before is one students burning midnight oils for exams ended up with C grades, other lucky fella glance through textbook minutes before ended up with A.

Those stories present one facts and deliver opinions that minimal effort triumphant in the end of the day. Case by case basis, of course, but let sink in for a while, does it make a better version of you? Most probably not, it will make us depends on luck a lot.

Skimming get you A in Data Structure 1, might not be the case in Data Structure 2. Keep eating unhealthy might still you long life expectancy, but don’t you think it’s better if we have healthy lifestyle? Imagine if that 80 years old guy if he have healthy lifestyle, he might broke oldest man alive. That lady who passed away in her 50 might not reach 30 years if she didn’t have healthy lifestyle.

We control our own life. Be a better person, you know what best for you. Strive hard to that direction. This is one value that I want to instill in my family.

New year, new look. Hello 2016

I’m trying to back again. And this time, I promise to myself to come back here often and write often. I know, I said the same line couple years back.

It’s tough to maintain consistency, tough if we’re not make it as a habit. So here I am want to get better on that by setting up an attainable goals, and more importantly, I’ll make writing as a habit.

Sigh. That’s tough, I don’t know what I’m sign up to.

Oh well, life is tough, just do it and move on. To start off, let’s do makeover, by giving fresher look it will keep the writing spirit high.

Here are couple themes that I’d like to give it a go:

I pick none of them, I do really consider it though. Theme and look in the end it’s a matter of personal taste, I picked Independent Publisher, it has good typography, simple layout, and it looks good in both desktop and phone.

Now here come the hard part, writing.

Hello 2016. 🙂

Dealing with failure

Our next failure could be an unwritten script in our life, yet failures sometime open up other opportunities.

I’d like to refer into this post the next time I burden myself with a success Ivory tower, I failed to get into an IIT and 10 years later I could not be happier. This story should give us a moment of pause in pursuing a single objective, then to be prepared in facing failure.

Most of the time we’re not equipped when dealing with failure.

Phone tale, the unknown number

Be organized, be organized, be organized …” this words always chanting in my head whenever I have difficulties to find something, but it soon disappear when I found what I searching for. I want to be organized, well who doesn’t? at least everyone would claimed or trying to.

In some part I would like to boast that I am taking care of my stuff, organize files in PC, file naming, things inside my bag. You just cannot judge from my desk, my desktop are clean and crisp 🙂 . Nevertheless one thing I am lacking of, quite contrary with detail to digital stuff, I am not good to organize phone contacts. For couple reason I have lost many contacts in my phone again and again not because it never fail to save it, it was phones who fail me, lost, break, dead brick, my contacts just gone.

It’s lame and I know I need to improve it someday… somewhere … or.. some-other-life beyond.
Procrastination kick in.

New habit, clean and simple

Having enter contact number again and again, I need to ask my family, friends, associates again and by nature it will get filtered to only numbers which I contact or receive call most, it could be that unwittingly I had apply Pareto principle, 20/80, to my contacts. Please no hurt feeling if your number were not in my list in fact I still want to take your number in my records but I don’t know how to call you :D, that’s not entirely true, changing behavior in this new social life make some people -especially that who well converse in social networking- are more comfortable to connect each other via chat, mail, tweeter, or Facebook message, or wall. I do feel that way, phone with data plan is a must.

I also build a new behavior to only take call from known number, this behavior build on experience taking blocked number or unknown number who mostly come from telemarketer.
How about, if it’s my friend who call me but I don’t have their number in my record?
To me now after sometime,

  1. I believe that they will call back for 2nd time if that was important, or
  2. At least leave a message then I can call them back.

Easy breezy.

Once I had phone call then when I call it back I learn that it was my baby call and pick up the phone, I didn’t know her phone number, because she still learning to talk as well. Yes, we kind of weird somehow.

My wife doesn’t have this behavior, she just pick up the phone and get it done with it. One day she got phone call from unknown number as well, quickly she was pick her phone up

she said, a Moslem greetings, then the voice from other end kind of freak out and asking back with higher pitch

” is this Anita?!? “

Actually I don’t really recall the name but sounds like ‘Nita’. She said ‘no’ and hung up. Well that was fun! 🙂 I just can’t imagine if it was her mother call and doesn’t cross her mind that her daughter answering with that greeting.

Until the phone rung again and confirm back that it is not “Anita” number. 😀

Upgrading to WordPress 3.5 at year end

It’s rarely happen that we got upgrade package in the end of the year, what happen in industry nowadays usually they will have upgrade, new package, new product at beginning of the year. Take a look at specific company, they will say the launching of new product usually happen in the beginning of their fiscal year, talk to your friends who has accounting hat, they will nodding because it’s easier to record book keeping or management will say it’s easier to measure and plan the budgeting, marketing and sales figures.

Change is good

This is not happen with software industry, time has changed and now we live in fast paced environment and most of software industry they do lavishly on services, the gain is on consumer side, to make it fair the gain happen for both sides provider and consumer, consumer will have good product (provide that we select product wisely) and the provider will gain a massive marketing value and recognition.

Change, change, change

elvin jones

WordPress just release 3.5 Elvin yesterday. It wasn’t surprising that software release could be any time but it is so common that last 3 week of December is time for slow down and hit the keyboard back on January, unless WordPress team are so confident with their release so that they will not go banging their head with bug fixes on new year eve. Nevertheless I appreciate the effort and the spirit from wordpress team, their passion as startup (do we still consider wordpress as startup) still there.
It’s been successful 2012 for them.

With the spirit of change, this blog need a change as well, change it’s theme from Verbage theme to the default Twenty Twelve theme.

Critics on Twenty Twelve

I have been fans of web content so far, I don’t really know what is the name or definition by it but here is my take, I like beautifully designed web, but the main reason to visit and re-visit (this is important I guess) webpage always the information its provides meaning to say simplicity and readability are key to me. Twenty Twelve definitely supply simplicity, and the readability, it’s Open Sans font with spacing work great its pleasant to read.

I use it now and so far I like it, simple and give high degree of readability.

Twenty Twelve maybe the 3rd generation of default WordPress theme, in fact I never really bother to look default theme previously, this is why:

Its too mainstream

Its everyone urge to stand-out and bend from mainstream right? Oh, just admit it :).
I notice that the comment reply located just below the headline, well this is new to me but for what reason? I believe even in previous default theme the comment reply was located after the post content, the idea behind it is simple that people will read your post and scroll down, scroll down, and down until they finish reading and hit reply to leave comment. What make the change? does it have research on it? behavior change?

However, its time to change, I give a go figure.
